Footprints in the Sand

by "Mary Stevenson"
Please see note that follows...
s

One night a man had a dream. He dreamed he was walking along the beach with the Lord. Across the sky flashed scenes from his life. For each scene, he noticed two sets of footprints in the sand; one belonging to him, and the other to the Lord.

When the last scene of his life flashed before him, he looked back at the footprints in the sand. He noticed that many times along the path of his life there was only one set of footprints. He also noticed that it happened at the very lowest and saddest times in his life.

This really bothered him and he questioned the Lord about it. 'Lord, you said that once I decided to follow you, you'd walk with me all the way. But I have noticed that during the most troublesome times in my life, there is only one set of footprints. I don't understand why when I needed you most you would leave me.'

The Lord replied, 'My precious, precious child. I love you and I would never leave you. During your times of trial and suffering, when you saw only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you.'

To the right are copies of correspondence that I received on WebMoms from Kathy Hampton "Kathy Bee" regarding the "Footprints in the Sand" poem. It has always had the status of "Author Unknown". According to Kathy Hampton, Mary Stevenson wrote the poem in 1936 at the age of 14. The first email contains a link to images of the copyright Mary Stevenson obtained for her work. The second email contains more information about Mary. Please look over these. I have not verified anything.

Dear Anita,
For years publishing houses have been cashing in on the works of a woman who time has ignored. Mary was young (14 in 1936) and poor when she wrote FOOTPRINTS. She knew nothing about copyrights or publishing. We are currently making the public aware of her gift to others such as the moms who are comforted. This year, you will hear more about Mary and discover how hard it's been to write a wrong. When nothing was done, another woman (Margaret Powers) began to claim Mary's Footprints. That's why it's important for me to make people aware of the true author. The truth IS the light of the world. If you would like any information and would like to contact me please call me at (562) 803-5530. We want you to use the poem...but please add Mary Stevenson as the author.
