  • TWO PAGE SPREADS - Allows books to be easily propped enticing the child to jump right into the pages.

  • KIDS KITS - combine popular books with the "stuff" needed to use the book, i.e., Science with Magnets Kit, Magic Kids Kit, Chess Kids Kit, etc.

  • FIND-THE-DUCK THEME - Many of our preschool books feature charming illustrations by Stephen Cartwright, where the little yellow duck is "hidden" somewhere on each page.

About Usborne Books & How I Got Started:

My name is Patti Stephen Wall, and I have been with Usborne Books for over ten years. I have four children, two girls, 14 and 12, and two boys, 9 and 7. I am married to a wonderful man who is really supportive of this home business! I first saw these books at a curriculum fair and just loved the quality and content of the books. There was such a wide range of topics from which to choose and I wanted them ALL for my library. I also learned that there were no active distributors in my area at the time (there currently are only about 6000 active across the country!) So I thought it would be a good way for me to build our children's library and earn money at the same time.

I started out doing home shows for my friends and it just took off from there! I then branched out to doing bookfairs at preschools and daycares. Later I began to work with the school and library market. I found that teachers and librarians love these books, especially the quality library bindings we have and all the exclusive titles we carry.

There are so many ways to sell these books, and I enjoy finding creative avenues in which to market the books, i.e., arts & crafts fairs, educational booths and conferences, real estate companies, horse stables, soccercamps, ballet schools, and computer centers and MORE! I have found, however, that the home show market is truly an easy area to start with because most parents are concerned about literacy and want good, quality, reasonably priced books for their kids. At home shows, you also meet a lot of other contacts like teachers, directors of preschools, and other interesting people who would be interested in getting more of these books in their schools and centers.

What was it about Usborne Books that appealed to me in my consideration for a home business? Well--I knew this was something that would work within my family structure and be a good, profitable family business too. I also felt the product was something that I could stand behind--promoting and encouraging literacy! I also knew that the income potential was incredibly great!!

These books are beautifully illustrated on acid-free paper and their bite-size pieces of text encourage kids to dive right in! I know that kids are into "reality-based learning," i.e., how things are made, where does this go, how does that work? and so on. My kids often like to read them in the evening before they go to bed. The price point is great too for a lot of people--the average book is $5-8 and over 80% of our 1000 title catalog is under $10!!

So you can see why we decided on Usborne Books. It is truly a fun, flexible business that we can do alongside our family where we can role model qualities and values before our children. We want to be able to help them learn more about life, how to dream really big dreams, and to become whatever they want to be when they get older. My children are even involved with me in this business. When she was just six years old, my now ten year old daughter sold over $60 in books to a woman at a festival! My 12-year old daughter is my organizer and helps me get my folders in order and puts labels on all my books that come in. And my boys love to help pass out bookmarks. This is why I like to share this business with others everywhere I go. Much of what I have learned came from a woman named Ilene Meckley (this is her website). She teaches seminars around the country to others in direct sales companies like Usborne Books, Discovery Toys, Tupperware, etc. -- on how to be more effective in their business and how to share their opportunity with others in a natural, caring way. I even did an interview with her which I am including here in this section Interview with Ilene Meckley which I am sure you will enjoy reading.

I love helping others get started with Usborne Books. It's my most favorite part of this business. I have made some really good friends with many of the consultants in my group, several of whom periodically help me get out info packets to people who request it. I have consultants all across the country. Since most of them are online, I provide support with email, and on-line training newsletters. I also send out mailings periodically with flyers and other business related items that help them in their business along with phone calls as needed. I really want them each to be successful!

So now that you have learned a bit about me and my family, please read on and learn more about Usborne Books and see WHY these are books that kids love to read and WHY this a home business you should consider for you and your family.
